5 simple tips to make your Android phone feel like new again

Just like your car, your Android device also needs proper maintenance so that you can identify and fix problems to prevent future problems.

First, you should thoroughly clean the outside of your phone , since you probably hold it near your face on a daily basis. Dust, dirt and grime can quickly build up on charging ports and speakers, which is not only bad for your hygiene but can also shorten the lifespan of your phone.

However, the most important maintenance takes place under the hood and involves changing phone settings that you may have never touched before.

An investment of just a few minutes can transform your Android phone into something new, at least until you can update it. Read on for five easy tips to clean, reorganize, and personalize your Android phone to keep it in top condition.

And if you're looking to get a new device, check out the best Android phones for this year .

Delete all your forgotten apps

Take a few minutes to check your home screen or app drawer and delete any apps you no longer use. In addition to taking up valuable storage space, these apps may also have access to personal information or permissions that you approved when you first launched the app.

How to remove an app can vary depending on your device manufacturer, but I've covered all the basics in this article . Read it if you don't see an uninstall option after long pressing the app icon.

You can also uninstall apps via the Play Store.

Delete old files to free up disk space

After removing all old apps, free up more storage space by browsing saved files on your Android phone. It's all too easy to forget all those random files you download, like the take-out menu from the new restaurant around the corner or a GIF sent by a friend. And those files add up. The quickest and easiest way to manage your phone storage is to use the pre-installed Files app.

In fact, some phones use a variant of the same application. For example, on Samsung it is called "My Files". In the pixel area there are only files. On the OnePlus 10 Pro, it's the file manager - you get the idea.

I recommend opening your phone's app drawer and searching for "Files." This will most likely reveal what your phone manufacturer calls the app.

First, check your Downloads folder. There you can delete files you no longer need or move them to a location like Google Drive .

Most file apps also display large files stored on your device. For example, the File Manager app on the OnePlus 10 Pro has a section for files that take up a lot of space.

Adjust your home screen settings to give it a new look

One of the best aspects of Android is the ability to customize the entire look of your phone. From installing app icon packs to completely replacing the launcher your phone uses, there are plenty of options to personalize your phone.

While you can start setting up launchers and installing app icons, first explore the home screen settings your phone already offers. I do this from time to time and it's amazing how subtle changes to things like app design can make it feel like a completely new phone.

Press and hold on an empty area of your Home screen, then select "Home Settings" (or a variation thereof). This will open the Home Screen Options where you can adjust various settings.

Settings such as the app's grid size. Going from a 4x5 to a 5x5 app grid may seem like a small change, but that extra column can make a big difference (the same goes for making the grid smaller).

Here you'll also find settings for things like swiping down on the home screen to view notifications instead of having to swipe up from the top of the screen.

Check your phone's specific settings and experiment with your home screen setup.

Optimize your device settings

Speaking of settings, this is a good time to review and change any settings that have been bothering you. I've got a rundown of the settings you should tweak and adjust on any Android phone to get the most out of it.

For example, activating dark mode not only improves the appearance of the app but also saves battery life. And yes, I'll even show you how to stop app icons from automatically appearing on your home screen.

Device settings are easily overlooked, but are important to making your device perfect.

Customize your privacy options

Before you take a break, do yourself and your Android phone one last favor: check your privacy settings.

Open the Settings app, then tap Privacy > Permissions Manager . Browse each category to see which apps currently have access to your personal data. Are you looking for an app that you don't want to have access to your location? Turn it off. The same applies to contacts, calendar or camera.

It doesn't take long to go through each section, and even if it does, it's worth it.

Lynsey, known on TV as the Clean Queen, is the UK's first clean influencer.

Speaking to Ideal Home, the 43-year-old shared her tips for drying clothes quickly indoors if you don't have a dryer.

The best ? The tricks won't cost you a cent.

curtain rods

If you don't have much space for a clothesline at home, you can hang your clothes on the curtain rod using a hanger.

"One of my favorite drying tips is to put clothes on a hanger and then hang them on the curtain rod with the window open," says Lynsey.

"You'll be surprised at how quickly you can dry clothes this way.

"The clothes also wrinkle less and are much easier to iron."

Using the right type of hanger is essential for your clothes to keep their shape. Therefore, try not to hang T-shirts on trouser hangers.

Own drying room

This tip may be more difficult if you have limited space. However, Lynsey recommends setting up a well-ventilated area to dry clothes.

It could be a guest bedroom, a sunroom or a second bathroom.

"Keep the room well ventilated," he says.

"Open the windows and close the door to allow fresh air to circulate."

Winter sun

If you're really struggling to dry your clothes indoors, there's still hope.

Lynsey recommended making the most of the winter sun by hanging your clothes outside. However, it's worth checking the weather beforehand to make sure it won't rain.

If it's going to rain and you absolutely need to hang your clothes, a waterproof mat will do the trick.

Simply hang it over clothes to be dried to prevent moisture from penetrating.

Easy Laundry: The correct amount of detergent is only 3 tablespoons

[Full text content cannot be retrieved]

— The Internet is full of laundry tips, but like much of the Internet, some of these so-called tips and tricks are click bait. ... cleaning options .

Before cleaning, preheat your oven to remove dirt and debris.

Heating the oven not only loosens dirt, but it also creates condensation as the oven cools. Therefore, make sure to keep the door closed while cooling. Condensation prevents this dirt from re-adhering to the oven doors or walls and makes cleaning easier.

After thoroughly spraying the oven with cleaner, let it sit for at least a few minutes to further loosen food particles and grease. Then wipe the oven with a cloth for less dirty areas. If food remains stuck, you'll probably need something more substantial, like the rough side of a sponge. Between the condensation and the cleaner, the food residue should come off relatively easily with good scrubbing.

When you're finished cleaning, wet a towel and wipe the inside of the oven again with just water. This will help remove any cleaning agent residue.

Detergent is the unexpected solution to cleaning dirty oven racks

dirty kitchen oven

When cleaning our kitchens, the oven rack is one of the elements that we most overlook and that often requires special attention. We set pots , roast our turkeys, and bake our favorite cookies without worrying about the residue and stains that accumulate on oven racks over time. Spending hours removing crusty, caked-on bits doesn't sound appealing, and leaving racks in the oven during a self-clean cycle isn't an option.

Unfortunately, this is due to the self-cleaning cycle, which uses extremely high temperatures that can discolor and potentially damage the metal of the oven racks. As is often the case, the most effective solution to this perennial problem is neither new nor high-tech. There's also no need to go to the specialty section of the hardware store because you probably have it on hand at home: laundry detergent.

Yes, the same powder or liquid detergent that freshens up stained clothes and brightens whites can also work wonders on stubborn rust stains. Simply combine the cleaning power of detergent and a little effort, and your dirty oven racks will look like new.

Steps to clean dirty oven racks with detergent

The first step is to make sure the racks have cooled sufficiently if you have recently used the oven. Then start removing the oven racks from your kitchen appliance. Prepare your bathtub by filling it with hot water, or get a bathtub or sink large enough to submerge your shelves. Add a generous amount of detergent to the hot water, making sure to mix well. The idea is to make a soap mixture that is a little more concentrated than what you would use to wash clothes.

Next, completely submerge the oven racks in soapy water, making sure they are well covered. Allow the racks to soak for at least six hours or, even better, overnight. This longer soaking time allows the cleaning agent to penetrate and soften stubborn, stuck-on dirt. After soaking, take a non-abrasive scouring pad or brush and gently scrub the stains.

With a cleaning product, you will find that most dirt can be easily removed and stubborn stains that once seemed impossible are now very easy to remove. When you are satisfied with the cleanliness of the grates, rinse them thoroughly with clean water and dry them. Your sparkling clean grills are now ready for new baking adventures.
