Rick Rubin interviews RHCP about the band's new album, which was recorded and mixed on analogue tape

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' new album Unlimited Love , produced by Rick Rubin, was recorded and mixed on analog tape and sounds like it, at least based on broadcasts where "analog goodness" shines. A month-long series of Pushkin podcast shows Broken Records about the release began last Friday.

In this episode, Rubin chats with guitarist John Frusciante, his first with the band in 16 years. Towards the end of the episode, singer Anthony Kiedis appears. Tuesday's episode features Frusciante and Kiedis. I haven't listened to it yet and the vinyl hasn't arrived yet, but when it does I'll be done. Agree!

Tips for cleaning your garden safely | best stories | wow.com

[Full text content cannot be retrieved]

You may not feel like it, but spring is coming and spring cleaning is as much about your garden as it is about your home.

Spring Cleaning: Seven ways to clean your walls - the most important surface to never ignore

your walls may not be high on your spring cleaning list, but when was the last time you washed them? While vigorous scrubbing with soapy water can do more harm than good, there are many gentler ways to thoroughly clean walls without damaging the paint. It's easy to remove nasty stains, stains, and even odors from your walls with a few simple tools, and here's how to use them.

For a quick wash, use a mild detergent.

Kitchen walls are particularly prone to trapping grease and dirt, so a more thorough scrubbing is important to remove stubborn dirt.

Fill a clean bucket with warm water and add a capful of mild liquid detergent.

Soak up the liquid with a clean sponge and wring it out before wiping down the walls with a sponge.

Take cold water and rinse out the solution about 10 minutes after applying the detergent and let it dry.

You must be careful to wring out the sponge well before washing the walls to avoid water and drop stains.

To speed up the drying process, take a clean, dry microfiber cloth and gently wipe the wall to absorb excess water.

Dust your walls with a soft cloth

Dust can settle on any surface in the home, and walls are no exception.

Even if you don't realize it, your walls can harbor a layer of dust that can trigger allergies and cloud the air.

Dusting walls is easy, but don't underestimate this simple task, so incorporate it into your regular cleaning routine for an even fresher home.

Use a clean, lint-free cloth and dampen it with a little water before going over the walls.

For hard-to-reach areas, use a clean, damp mop to dust off any deposited particles.

Remove stains with vinegar

When dealing with stubborn stains or stains on the wall, is a gentle but effective solution to removing ingrained dirt.

Simply mix a cup of white vinegar in a bucket filled with warm water and apply the solution with a sponge.

Treat stains by gently rubbing the area with the sponge before letting it dry.

Use baby wipes

Makeup remover wipes or even baby wipes are great for removing stubborn residue from walls.

Wrap the cloth around your index finger and rub the stain until it disappears. Choose biodegradable products to do your bit for the environment and throw them in the trash instead of flushing them down the toilet.

Vacuum matt walls

Glossy color is more durable than matte finish formulations, especially when it comes to cleaning.

If your matte walls are looking less weathered, use your vacuum's soft brush attachment to remove dust and dirt from the surface.

Treat latex paint with a cleaning spray

Latex gear can easily be cleaned with an all-purpose household cleaner.

Simply spray the liquid onto your walls and wipe with a clean cloth.

Spray from a distance so as not to oversaturate the surface.

We spend a lot of time in bed, so it's no wonder mattresses get dirty. Between the animals that sleep in your bed and the mites that take up residence, there's no shortage of horror stories.

But don't panic. You probably don't need to change your mattress just yet . We have expert tips and tricks on how to clean your mattress at home.

Throw away the bed before cleaning your mattress

The first step in cleaning a mattress is stripping the bed.

The first step in cleaning a mattress is stripping the bed.

The first step is to remove the physical barriers between you and the mattress. Remove your bedding, pillows , sheets and mattress protectors .

"You need to remove as many layers as possible to get rid of all the dirt, dust, etc. that's seeping through," says Jon Chan, senior director of lab operations for Review and resident cleaning expert.

It's true: while you're sleeping, sweat and skin from your body can seep into the mattress and stay there if you don't do something about it.

Place the sheets and mattress protector in the washing machine while you clean the mattress. Check fabric labels as they provide detailed cleaning instructions.

Your mattress may also have a quilted cover that can be opened or removed. Check your mattress brand's protocol as some are removable and others are not. For example: the Nectar mattress cover is technically washable, but removing it will void the company's warranty.

Vacuum your mattress

Your vacuum cleaner is the first line against dust and dust mites trapped in your mattress.

Vacuum your mattress to remove dirt and dust. But before you jump into bed with a big handheld vacuum, a handheld vacuum is the perfect tool.

Some cordless vacuums even come with a special head for cleaning mattresses. Dyson, one of our trusted brands, offers a mattress tool that attaches to a number of their machines.

"All types of mattresses should be vacuumed regularly to remove dust and allergens," says Madeline Miller, Product Specialist at The Laundress . "We recommend vacuuming at least once a month and before deep cleaning, maybe more often if there are allergens in the home such as: B. Pets."

Don't just vacuum the top of the mattress. He adds that you should vacuum the sides of the mattress, under the bed, and behind the headboard.

Sprinkle baking soda on your mattress

Baking soda is your friend when cleaning a mattress.

Baking soda is your friend when cleaning a mattress.

Baking soda really is a miracle ingredient. It is not only suitable for baking cookies, but also for removing odors.

"Sodium bicarbonate is an amphoteric oxide," explains Chan. "That means it reacts with strong acids and alkalis, which create some of the strongest odors and render them ineffective."

Sprinkle baking soda on your mattress and let it sit for 30 minutes, then vacuum your mattress again.

If you're just doing a general update, you can put your linens back on and you're good to go. You can even consider rotating your mattress after cleaning so it wears out evenly. Check with your mattress manufacturer for specific guidelines.

Remember to spray your mattress

Steaming isn't just for clothes. You can also spray your mattress.

"Another way to freshen up your mattress and neutralize odors is with steam," says Miller. "The high heat of the steam loosens dirt, grime and sweat from the surface and neutralizes odors."

She says you should place the steamer six inches from your mattress and move it up and down the entire surface and up the sides.

To get rid of certain sweat stains and coffee stains, just wipe them off. But don't use just any cleaning solution and start scrubbing. Some memory foam mattresses don't respond well to typical cleaning products, says Chan.

Also, avoid sharp brushes, especially on foam mattresses. Instead, opt for a soft, lint-free cleaning cloth to get the job done.

"Remember that synthetic materials like memory foam can trap moisture and lead to mold growth," says Miller. "It's important to avoid over-saturating with liquid detergents, as well as scrubbing or using a cleaning brush, as abrasion from the bristles can tear or tear the foam."

If you're dealing with a new spill, start by soaking up excess fluid, Miller says.

Urine stains can be treated by spraying them with white vinegar to fight uric acid and neutralize odors. The washerwoman sells a vinegar-scented essential oil cleaner if you're concerned about a sour-smelling mattress.

The washerwoman also sells a wash and dye piece that can be used on upholstery. Miller recommends working the soapy water into a cleaning cloth and gently rubbing the stain until it lifts. You can then clean the mattress, absorb excess moisture and let it dry before changing the linens. Miller suggests opening a window or putting a fan in the room to air it out while the mattress dries.

Use a mattress protector

A mattress protector keeps sweat, dust and other allergens away.

Using a mattress protector will keep your mattress clean and safe from spills and other messes in the long run.

"Investing in a good mattress cover is also a great way to protect it and extend its life, along with changing your linens weekly to prevent build-up of sweat and odor-causing dead cells," says Miller.

Tips from Héloïse: removing soot from the fireplace glass | Properties | timenews.net

Dear Héloïse, In a recent article, a reader reported that she had a problem removing soot from her fireplace glass. I worked as a chimney sweep for 32 years. Do not wet ash or rub against windows. It is a mild abrasive and leaves glass stains. A better way is to clean the windows as best you can (or if they are new) then pour some household cleaner on the INSIDE of the glass and let it dry. This forms a soap film on the glass which, like the soot and residue film on glass, can be easily removed with a damp paper towel. Then reapply the cleanser. I hope it helps. – Bill Klein, via email

FUSES

Dear Héloïse, a suggestion: Write the date of receipt and the customer service (technical support) number in the instruction manual when you receive a new item. Also take a picture on your phone to record it. This saves you time when you need information. — W. in Valparaiso, Indiana

SHRIMP STORAGE

Dear Héloïse, we love shrimp. They're great when you sauté them, add okra, or wrap them in bacon. A few years ago someone told me to take a quart size freezer bag and put 10-12 shrimp in it. Fill the bag with enough water to cover the shrimp. Then squeeze the air out of the bag. You have a freezer bag that looks like a water bladder with shrimp in it. Place this bag in the freezer for long-term storage. I've kept shrimp for up to eight months with no problems. I simply ran warm water over it and into the bag to thaw the shrimp and enjoy. – Doyle H. in Houston, Texas

TIPS FOR NEW PARENTS

Dear Héloïse, every year I bought a birthday card for each of my children and wrote them a short note telling them about their tastes, their friends, their hobbies and some anecdotes. It used to be 5 minutes once a year. I put the cards in a shoe box in my closet. As each boy turned 18, I would share his childhood story with him. It meant a lot to them. - Nancy, via email

ENCOUNTER OF SPICES

Dear Héloïse, Every time I buy spices, herbs and condiments, I write somewhere on the package with a permanent marker the date I opened it. Marking the date lets you know when to throw out items and replace with newer, cooler items. – Nancy O. in San Antonio, Texas

Dear Héloïse, my kids love that their burgers are round and not deformed. To be honest, me too. I take a large can of peaches, wipe the bottom clean, and then dip them in the burger meat. It leaves an impression that I slice and I have a nice round burger. — Cathy W. in Parma, Ohio

BERRY PASTE

Dear Héloïse, my strawberries still look mushy after washing and chilling. Am I doing something wrong? – Victoria C. in Florence, Alabama

Victoria, don't wash your berries before refrigerating them. Store them in a colander or plastic basket to allow air to circulate around the berries.

But be sure to wash them before you eat them. - Heloise

FADED COLOURS

Dear Héloïse, how can I prevent my vegetables from turning pale or discolored during cooking? — Edna L. in Emporia, Kansas

Edna, yes. For greener or more colorful carrots etc. just add some vinegar to the water while cooking.

And as a bonus, it also reduces odors! - Heloise

Clean crystals and leave them streak-free | Tom guide

Knowing how to clean windows may seem like a simple task at first. But the thing is, all kinds of smudges can end up on the glass, whether it's watermarks, fingerprints, or general dirt, and they can be difficult to remove. Even if you manage to remove these stains, the grease can leave streaks on your window that just won't go away. In the end, all that heavy lifting can seem counterproductive and leave things worse than when you started, like trying to clean a glass furnace .

But don't worry, with the right products and the right method, your windows will be like new again. The good news is that windows are actually one of the easiest things to clean and you can get crisp results in minutes. Here we explain exactly what you need to do and answer any questions you may have.

how to clean windows

what will you need

microfiber towels

sponge (optional)

detergent or

distilled white vinegar or

window cleaner

bucket

T-bar and wiper (optional)

1. When cleaning the windows inside, you should remove dust and cobwebs first. Clean the windows with a dry microfiber cloth and around the frame and sill. Don't forget to open the window to take a look at the hidden cracks. For extreme cases you can also use one of the best vacuum cleaners with the soft brush attachment.

2. Close your window when done. Depending on the degree of soiling, you now have two methods to choose from:

  • For daily cleaning , wipe windows with a damp microfiber cloth and apply warm, soapy water as needed. Wipe off the foam with a damp cloth.
  • For more stubborn stains , use soapy water but apply with the rough side of a sponge. Don't be too aggressive when scrubbing; You don't want to scratch the glass, but be persistent and apply soap until the stain is gone. Rinse with a damp microfiber cloth.
  • If you want to use a home remedy , distilled white vinegar is another option. You can dilute it in a spray bottle using one cup of vinegar in one cup of water. Then apply to glass and wipe off with a microfiber cloth. For stubborn stains, you can also leave it on for a minute or two before wiping it off. Then rinse off with a damp cloth.
  • You can also use a proprietary glass cleaner like Windex Original Blue Glass and Window Cleaner ($7.78, Amazon ). Follow manufacturer's directions for best results.

3. If you want to speed up the drying process and save on microfiber towels, you can also wipe off excess water with a squeegee . Just make sure you have a towel on the floor or edge to catch any drips and have one handy to dry the wiper between passes.

4. Dry with microfiber towels . Be sure to work in different directions to avoid streaks, and keep adjusting the cloth on dry sections to avoid water reapplication. You can also use kitchen paper for this.

5. If streaks are still visible, rinse and repeat from step 3 ; it's probably soap residue. Your windows should now be spotless on the inside, now it's time to tackle the outside.

6. This is probably a larger area here, so you'll need a larger bucket and lint-free rags . It's also best to do this on an overcast day, otherwise the sun can dry out the result before you've had time to remove the strips.

7. The size of the windows means using a spray bottle wouldn't be practical, so standard window cleaners are out the window (pun intended). You should fill the bucket with warm soapy water or distill white vinegar with water .

8. You can apply your solution with a cloth as above, but a much easier method is to use a T-bar and squeegee, like the MR.SIGA Professional Window Cleaning Combo ($16.99, Amazon ). These allow you to simply apply your cleaner to the glass, then quickly rinse and clean.

9. When cleaning with a squeegee try to work in an S shape from top to bottom , making sure to return to the starting point and finish towards the edge. This way there are no annoying watermarks.

10. Dry if necessary. Your windows should now be pristine. Don't forget to clean them regularly to make this task less painful.

What's the best way to clean windows?

There is no right answer to that. Water and dish soap will usually do the trick for most stains, but distilled white vinegar is another popular and long-lasting method. Vinegar is also great for removing limescale, making it great for water stains. That is why it is recommended in our guide to cleaning a glass shower screen .
