Decluttering your home may seem like a Herculean task that you'd rather put off than tackle. But a simple rule of thumb with a funny name can help you get ahead. This is called the "poop rule."
When considering whether to keep or discard an item, ask yourself this question: If the item had feces on it, would you wash it or throw it away?
This "rule" went viral after ADHD content creator Becka Karle, known on TikTok as @adhdorganized , posted a video about it on the social media platform in July. The video was viewed 175,000 times on TikTok before circulating on other social networks .
Karle told HuffPost that when she first learned about the poop rule, a therapist she saw helped her manage her symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. At the time, Karle was downsizing her home and struggling to clear out and put away the items she had accumulated over the years. Difficulty staying organized is a common challenge among people with ADHD (more on this below).
Her therapist told her to pick up any object and imagine pooping on it.
"Like an old toiletry product or something, that would be gross, right? Then my therapist said to me, "Do you want to pick up his poop?" And I said, "Of course not." Everything would be forgotten, you know? "said Karle. "And she said, 'Exactly.' Now how about a shirt that you often wear to work and I think, "Honestly, I would probably wash it."
Karle said the poop rule worked for her because she is "a very visual and literal person" and it made her "responsible."
In the comments to Karle's viral video, one TikTok user compared the poop rule to Marie Kondo's own cleaning technique , but with a twist: "So..." Does it bring joy? » by Marie Kondo? Has it become more visceral? To like."
And in a viral article that has been viewed more than five million times, Cooper Ownbey, an archival researcher and screenwriter, wrote on by introducing it." me to the "poop rule".
