Don't let an overflowing medicine cabinet or messy under-the-sink storage slow down your morning routine or make your evening skincare routine a stressful task. Not only is an organized bathroom more visually appealing, but it also helps the day run more smoothly. Without lost packaging, expired medications, or stacks of perfume samples cluttering your cupboards, you'll find exactly what you need, when you need it. Imagine a cleaner, nicer bathroom that doesn't leave you feeling overwhelmed.
If you're tired of dealing with a messy space, follow the advice of these professional organizers who invite you to donate or recycle items you no longer need. Below we'll share with you your complete list of things you need to get rid of as soon as possible.
Free cosmetic samples
It's fun to get free makeup, skincare, and perfume samples if you actually want to use them. "In almost every bathroom I've ever hosted, there are TONS of cosmetic samples that never get used," says Melissa Klug, owner of Home By Eleven . "Use it within two weeks or say goodbye. Don't let dozens or hundreds clutter your bathroom counters, drawers and storage spaces."
Discarded toiletries
From toothpaste, shampoo and body wash to a new facial serum, we've all tried a personal care product that we didn't like. Don't let half-empty bottles clutter up your space. "Instead of letting them sit around, consider swapping products with friends," says Ashley, founder of The Tailored Life . Reminder: Check expiration dates and times after opening icons before gifting products you don't like.
Expired medications and beauty products.
Check your bathroom for expired skin products, cosmetics, sunscreen, and medications. "Expired medications can lose their effectiveness or even become harmful, and old beauty products can irritate the skin or harbor bacteria," says Jackie Pittman, the expert behind Chez Nous Organizing . Some beauty and skin care products, particularly eye products, expire three months after opening. Tip: Pay attention to the dot after the opening symbol.
Most likely your toothbrush
Think about it: When was the last time you replaced your toothbrush? Experts agree that a new toothbrush is needed at least every three months, "sooner if the bristles are worn out," Pittman adds. Throw away your old toothbrush immediately!
and your razor blade
You probably don't replace your razor often enough. Jennifer Du Bois, professional organizer and founder of Home With Jen D , recommends changing the blade after about seven uses, which is usually when the blade becomes dull. "When you use a dull razor, you have to press harder to get a good shave, which increases the risk of cutting your skin," says Du Bois. Not to mention, razors stored in the shower can develop rust and bacteria.
Duplicates of everything
Take inventory of duplicates or rarely used items. Whether it's hot tools, cleaning supplies, soap dispensers, or toiletries, recycle duplicate items that take up valuable space. "By minimizing most of the things you use every day, you save space, time and money," says VonderHaar.
Old or worn towels
Not only can towels become discolored, ripped, and stained over time, they can also lose absorbency. "As a guideline, bath and hand towels should be replaced every two years," says Violetta Elezovic, owner of VS Organized Interiors , although they can last up to five years depending on wear and tear. Before you throw towels in the trash, consider recycling or donating them (many shelters accept old towels). Or reuse them in cleaning wipes.
