Safety Tips for Spring Cleaning

Rochester, Minnesota - Health Professionals Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati want to ensure that families and children stay safe this spring while attending a spring cleaning.

Various chemicals in cleaning products can be dangerous if swallowed or come into contact with the skin. It is important to avoid precautions for the use of cleaning agents to prevent accidental poisoning.

"It is important that people armed with the basic information about poison prevention in the home, such as keeping chemicals out of the reach of children and read labels and cans all skin care products," said Earl Siegel , Pharm., Executive Director, Drug and poison information center.

The Department of Health and Human Services of the United States offers the following tips to avoid accidents while spring cleaning.

• Keep chemicals. In their original containers or jars Do not use food containers such as cups, bottles, flasks or stores chemicals such as cleaning solutions.
• Turn on the fan and open the windows when the use of chemicals or household cleaners, and never smell container to see what's inside.
• Wear protective clothing (gloves, long sleeves, long pants, socks, shoes) when you spray pesticides or other chemicals. Stay away from areas that have been treated until the spray has dried or for at least one hour.
• Never mix household chemicals together. This can create a dangerous gas.
• Be sure to read all labels before you begin.
• Many household cleaners and chemicals can be toxic if swallowed. Be sure to block out the sight and reach of children, preferably in a high cabinet.
• If your goal is to clean your medicine cabinet, make sure you keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of your children while you work.
