BINGHAMTON (WBNG): With the arrival of colder temperatures in the southern part, it may be time to increase the heat. Beforehand, the Binghamton Fire Department gives some safety tips in case of a winter fire to ensure your safety.
"Make sure your equipment is working properly, have it professionally cleaned and change your filters, and if you use solid fuels like wood or granules, make sure your fireplace is cleaned regularly," said Timothy O'Neill, Binghamton Fire Chief.
The authorities also say, make sure your fireplace is clean. Accumulation through the use of your chimney can cause a fire, especially in old chimneys. At the end of the night, when you are done with your heater, you must take certain measures to prevent the creation of a fire.
"You should not leave the fire unattended, if you go to sleep at night, you should alleviate it, just common sense, keep it all right," said O'Neill.
When he is nearby and sees a column of smoke, the authorities invite him to take a second look at it before assuming that it is a fire.
"People are often mistaken because the stoves and fireplaces are lit for the first time, they'll see smoke in something they've never seen before, it's a good intention not to be angry, we'd rather be called instead of being called to become, "he said. O'Neill
