DALLAS, TEXAS (September 11, 2024) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reminding Louisianans to take action now to be prepared before, during and after Hurricane Francine.
Before:
- Make a plan with your family and discuss how you can communicate with each other if communication is limited. what to do if you are separated; and where to go if you need to evacuate.
- Prepare an emergency kit with canned food, bottled water, first aid supplies, flashlights, pet supplies, and any other items you may need.
- Prepare your home by securing or properly storing strong cleaning products, paints, solvents and other hazardous materials to prevent spills or chemical releases.
- Talk to your neighbors to make sure your community is ready.
While:
- If a storm develops, pay close attention to local news and emergency personnel announcements and follow any evacuation or shelter-in-place orders.
- Review your family plans and location of emergency supplies.
- If you run a generator, make sure it is outside and away from open windows, doors, or balconies. Generator fumes entering the interior can cause illness or death from carbon monoxide poisoning.
After:
- Follow the instructions of local incident commanders to lift protective measures or evacuation orders.
- Follow the instructions of the relevant authorities regarding the handling of waste, especially household hazardous waste or other potentially hazardous materials.
- Avoid flooding and do not enter your home or other flooded buildings.
