Janitor Brandon Pleshek started a conversation about whether items should be cleaned before being donated to a thrift store .
In a TikTok video showing the steps he took to clean his daughter's first pair of Crocs, which she outgrew, he revealed that he cleaned them with the goal of donating them.
"The last time I made a video like this I got a lot of comments saying it was a waste of time. Why should I clean them before giving them away? Just leave them there," he said.

"And I get it: life is hectic and sometimes that just isn't an option and that's okay. But for me, you know, I really enjoy the art of cleaning, so it's worth taking five to ten minutes to clean. I build the shoes as best I can so that they last a little longer and have a new life for someone else to enjoy."
Unlike Pleshek's last video about cleaning an item he donated, this video received a lot of love for its thoughtfulness towards the thrift store and the shoes' future owner.
"THANK YOU, as someone who has worked at a thrift store, we love it when we get clean donations, dirty things take a long time to clean and I've even been told 'throw them away if they're too dirty'" said one of them.
"As a child who only had the opportunity to buy used things, thank you. This will really brighten up a little one's whole world. Shiny like new fangs!!" commented another.
"I love your attitude and the way you explain things. The kindness you put into your actions is so obvious," one TikToker wrote.

Pleshek is right to clean the items before donating, as thrift stores generally require that they be in clean, usable condition.
It is often said that if you don't feel comfortable giving the item to a friend, then it is not worth gifting. This is a simple rule to keep in mind when evaluating whether something can be given as a gift.
As for Pleshek's Croc cleaning process, she took the Jibbitz off so her daughter could use it on her next pair and then sprayed the shoes with Dawn Powerwash (a dishwashing detergent spray).
After letting the detergent sit for five minutes, she scrubbed the shoes with a vegetable brush (which she doesn't use for vegetables), soaked them in soapy water for a final wash, and then rinsed them under the faucet.
