Get rid of mold in your home “for good” with affordable tips from a DIY guru – Devon Live

Mold is a common problem in British homes, particularly during the cold winter months.

A recent survey by Ronseal found that more than half (51%) of UK homes are affected, with almost a quarter (24%) of Brits suffering from mold problems several times a year.

The problem is so widespread that there are over 50,000 posts on the Mold TikTok hashtag, illustrating the scale of the struggle many people face. To help Brits tackle this stubborn problem, Ronseal DIY expert Jimmy Englezos shared his ideas on how to banish mold for good and identified the most typical places where it grows.

He explained: "Due to its stubborn nature, mold is a problem that many homes suffer from and it can be difficult to get rid of. It tends to thrive in wetter environments and can therefore become worse in the winter months. It only takes 24 hours. Mold spores take 48 hours to grow, and if humidity exceeds 60-65%, signs will be visible within 24 hours."

Read Jimmy's top tips below to get rid of mold once and for all.

1. Make sure the area is well ventilated - Mold likes warm, dark and humid conditions, so opening a window for an hour a day can significantly reduce humidity.

This tip is important when performing activities such as drying clothes indoors, as this can increase humidity. Be sure to use the extractor hood even after cooking or showering.

2. Wipe moisture from surfaces: The most effective way to prevent mold growth is to control the humidity in your home.

Therefore, wiping moisture from windows and walls will help keep these areas dry. It may also be beneficial to regularly ventilate closets and closets and use moisture absorbers in basements and closets.

3. Invest in a dehumidifier: This is a good option if your home has few windows as it removes moisture from the air and expels dry air back into the room.

This process reduces humidity and prevents condensation from forming. Clean it regularly to prevent clogging and maintain air circulation.

4. Heat the room: Although heating can be expensive, turning it on for short periods of time can help prevent mold by preventing rooms from cooling down.

The ideal temperature for the living room is between 20°C and 23°C, while for the bedroom and kitchen it is 16°C. It is recommended not to lower the temperature below 14°C.

5. Check and repair leaks: Check for leaks as leaky faucets and pipes can promote mold growth, especially in enclosed spaces such as closets.

Regular inspections of the roof, attic, gutters, window seals and plumbing systems can further prevent leaks. .

How to get rid of mold on a budget?

For those who don't want to spend too much , Jimmy also offered the following tips.

1. Anti-Mold Spray – Special anti-mold treatments are available from various retailers and can be sprayed directly onto the surface to combat mold growth.

Clean the surface with a damp cloth or sponge and remove mold. Once the mold is removed, use a clean, dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture.

2. Dish Soap: The same technique can also be done with dish soap and water instead of spray.

This method is also more cost effective as washing up liquid can be purchased for just 62p. Be careful when removing mold from wallpaper as excess water can cause bubbles.

3. White Vinegar – This ingredient is very effective against mold and can be bought for just 35p.

To kill mold, make a solution of one part vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray on the affected areas and leave for an hour.

Then wipe off the vinegar residue with a damp cloth, which should also remove the mold.

4. Bleach: Similar to white vinegar, a solution can be made using household bleach and is available from 60p.

Mix one part bleach and four parts water before wiping the solution on the wall with a cloth and rubbing gently to remove mold.
