Many people wonder whether they should wash their bedding as often as we do, and many experts have given different answers.
Jonathan Warren, bed expert and director of Time4Sleep , has shared bed cleaning tips to debunk some of the most common bed hygiene myths.
One of them is how to flip a mattress and how often to wash mattress protectors.
Warren said: "It's important to remember that all bedding, from sheets and pillows to mattresses, must be cleaned according to the washing instructions for the specific product."
"Before cleaning your bedding, be sure to follow these instructions to avoid damage.
Flip your mattress over and wash your mattress protector.
Warren advises: "A mattress protector not only increases sleeping comfort, but also protects against everyday dirt that does not come into contact with the mattress.
"A good hygiene practice would be to wash it every one to two months.
"But when we remove the mattress protector or flip the mattress, it is also an opportunity to improve bed hygiene and clean the mattress as we remove it.
"There are special mattress cleaning powders you can buy, or you can use laundry detergent just as effectively.
"We recommend at least vacuuming to remove the buildup of hair, dust and dirt that would otherwise remain on the mattress when flipped over."
wash the sheets
The expert added: "Washing bed linen and duvet covers weekly will keep your bed comfortable, clean and fresh. If left unwashed, bacteria can multiply, causing skin irritation and unpleasant odors.
"Basically, the best way to wash a duvet cover and sheet is on a cold cycle (e.g. 30 degrees) with an inorganic detergent and a tennis ball in the drum to ensure the fibers remain soft.
"It's important that bedding is completely dry (either outside on a clothesline or in a dryer) before using on the bed to avoid musty, musty smells."
