Medical MRMC tips for allergy management

Since spring brings sunshine, emerging green, and longer days, many people fear sinus pressure, headaches, itchy eyes, and breathing problems that this brings with it.

An April 28 press release from the Moberly Regional Medical Center said more than 50 million people have nasal allergies and half of them have seasonal pollen allergies, according to the recently published Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America (AAFA) a list. One of the toughest places in the country to live with allergies.

"Given the changing climate, this time of year can be extremely difficult for people with allergies," said Courtney Ramsey, FNP of the Moberly Rural Health Clinic, in a press release. "While we see high pollen counts at this time of year and avoidance may be inevitable, there are a few things to consider for people with allergies."

If you or someone in your family has hay fever or allergic rhinitis, MRMC suggests these helpful tips to help manage the symptoms:

: • Leave the pollen outside. At the door, take your shoes off as much as possible to avoid pollen from spreading around your home.

• Close the windows and dust the fans. Despite good weather, very sick people should keep the windows closed to prevent allergens from entering. If you use a ceiling fan, clean it well in the spring. Replace the air filters in your home and in your car.

• Keep your immune system strong. Eat fresh, clean, and nutritious foods and stay active. The healthier your immune system, the better prepared your body is to fight histamines.

• Pay attention to the pollen count. Daily changes - The daily count by zip code can be found at www.pollen.com

• Drink hot beverages. Herbal teas can help relieve congestion and keep you hydrated.

No matter where you live this year, allergies are likely to affect someone in your home. In addition to tips on avoiding allergy triggers, there are many effective treatments available to minimize symptoms.
