The sight of crisp white sheets on a freshly made bed is one of life's simple pleasures. But sheets and clothes never stay white for long, even the smallest stain makes the fabric look dirty and old.
Before you reach for a grocery store laundry detergent, consider this greener option, according to a TikTok user.
Kate, who goes by @my_plastic_free_home , prefers sodium percarbonate (aka oxygen bleach) to keep her whites looking like new.

"Sodium percarbonate, or natural bleach as I like to call it, is an environmentally friendly product that is only active for a few hours while it does its job and then breaks down into oxygen, water and soda with no impact on the environment. Surroundings. ' he explained in a TikTok video .
To increase the load on your washing machine, Kate suggests adding a quarter cup of baking soda to the machine.
To soak, Kate adds half a cup to five liters of water and lets the items soak for a few hours. Then she puts the laundry in the machine for the rinse cycle and extends the drying time outdoors. This is a good option for yellowish whites and stubborn stains.

"I combine that with natural sunlight as the best whitening agent you can get for your whites," Kate said.
And it looks like Kate's method emanates from her before and after pictures, which show white fabric stained with brown and yellow dirt that has transformed to look brilliant white again.
The information about the purge was welcomed by Kate's followers, although there was some confusion in the comments as to whether the powder she was speaking of was actually baking soda.
However, sodium percarbonate and bicarbonate (baking soda) are different things. The first consists of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide.

Although sodium percarbonate is an ingredient in laundry detergents to help remove stains and soften, you can use sodium percarbonate just like Kate did. You can find sodium percarbonate at health food stores like Natural Good Life, which sells 500g for $8.50 .
"To me, pure sodium percarbonate is a better option: green ingredient, packaging and buying green business support," explained Kate.
Many Kate fans were keen to try the trick for themselves.
"Thanks very much! I've tried going green but that can be difficult with chronic illness so this is perfect," one wrote.
"It really is the best! My mom has been using it for years and it has saved my kids' clothes," said another.

One viewer was so enthusiastic that he wanted to know what else could be cleaned with sodium percarbonate.

The main problem for Kate's fans when testing the product appeared to be the lack of sunshine in the UK and Ireland. Luckily for us in Australia we have plenty of sunlight to wash our whites.
