How to participate in a clean beach this year

Every beach section in the United Kingdom can find around 150 discarded plastic bottles.

It's just a shocking statistic of how plastic and other debris can dramatically damage our beautiful beaches and endanger our marine life.

To add that campaign group , Surfers Against Sewage says that about 5,000 elements are marine marine pollution per mile of beach in the UK. From plastic bottles to food containers and discarded cleaning products.

With the growing interest in our beaches and seas driven by Blue Planet II , and a greater commitment to government and business to reduce the amount of plastic we use in the UK, there's never been a better time for you to do one of the best ways of doing so to do is to participate in the cleaning of our beautiful beaches.

With the help of Friends of the Earth and the Marine Conservation Society , here are our best tips for participating in a clean beach in 2018:

1. Join a clean national beach

Following the success of last year's event, which attracted nearly 7,000 people, the Great British Beach Clean will take place from 14 to 17 September. The event, organized by MCS, removes harmful waste from the coast by recording information about what is found and the amount of waste it finds.

"The data from leaves that have given us over the years have helped a lot, from bags of 5 bp on cotton bags and paper recent announcements of projects refund systems returnable bottles. Lizzie Avant, official of the beach and river cleaning project at MCS, he told Countryliving.com/uk.

2. Find a local event

If you do not want to wait until September, there is often more beach cleaning at the base. The easiest way is to get in touch with local environmental groups. Friends of the Earth has local groups in many coastal areas of the country.

"Many of these [local groups] are regularly cleaning up beaches to protect the beautiful shores that are being destroyed by plastic pollution," says Tom Wright, activist coordinator for Friends of the Earth. "Taking part in organized beach cleaning is really a great way to connect with like-minded people and be part of something big.

"It also means that you get the best local knowledge that is useful when it comes to things like tides and where you need more cleanliness."

3. Organize your own cleaning with a group of friends

Wright says that by taking things literally into his own hands, he can "introduce new people to the fight against plastic pollution." But there are some things to keep in mind when fighting against yourself:

  • Stay with a small group. Especially if this is the first time you are organizing a clean beach because it is easier to manage. "As more and more people are involved, it would be important to think about logistics, such as parking, or if you want to arrange transportation for your group of cleaners' beaches," Wright explains.
  • Make sure you know where your nearest recycling center is located. After all, it would be a waste to get rid of this garbage and not throw it away properly.
  • First the safety! "Heavy-duty gloves are essential to prevent glassware from becoming a problem," advises Wright. Similarly, Prior says he should check the tide in advance and notify the beach owner, who can also help with information such as container collection. It is also worth carrying out a risk assessment; Additionally you can find a template for this in the MCS website.
  • Preparation is the key. Friends of the Earth recommends using reusable collection bags to make sure a trash can full of rubbish does not splash on the beach (and undo all of your work!) The durable bags will also serve you for future beach cleaning.
  • Do not forget to have fun! "It's important to convey a sense of camaraderie," Wright suggests. "There's no reason to save the planet, is not it fun, why not take a picnic in your freshly cleaned beach to reward everyone for your efforts?"
