Greene County Public Health provides advice on storm cleaning safety

Greene County Public Health has some tips to help keep residents safe and healthy as many are still without power cleaning up Monday's storm.

They recommend that if you are using a portable generator, make sure it is at least 20 feet from your home. Generators shouldn't be used indoors because of the amount of carbon monoxide that can build up quickly.

When it comes to food safety during a power outage, it is best to keep the doors closed to keep food refrigerated and frozen. According to these guidelines, food can be kept for up to four hours in the refrigerator, 48 hours in a freezer and 24 hours in a half-freezer. If you've been without power for more than four hours, it is recommended that refrigerated foods be kept in a cooler with ice packs or frozen gel packs.

Chainsaw injuries are another common problem when cleaning up the storm. It is recommended to consult the manufacturer's manuals and recommendations for safe operation. When using a chainsaw, personal protective equipment such as a helmet, safety glasses, hearing protection, heavy gloves, and boots that cover the ankle should be worn. Other recommendations include avoiding working near defective power lines and calling the emergency services immediately.
