Clean up this Christmas: treat pine needles, glitter and spilled material with our tips

Vacation fun can cost us not only a few spills, but also a lot of cleaning products.

I spoke to Henry Paterson, the cleaning department manager, for his best advice.

Tree Clutter: Henry says, "To clean the pine needles in the carpet, apply a little hand sanitizer to the area and let it sit overnight to loosen the sap glue. Brush it in the morning to lift the needles, then vacuum. Use duct tape to pick up stragglers. ""

My advice: you can choose two bottles of hand sanitizer on superdrug.com for £ 10 and save up to £ 3.98 when you buy two 500ml bottles of Defendol Advanced Formula Hand Wash Gel, PVC, £ 6.99.

Sparkling Cleaning: Henry says, "If you have stubborn glitter on your vinyl, wood, or laminate flooring, dampen a rag, rub the glitter, and use static electricity to clean it off." You can also use a tape-based lint roller for any type of flooring that will remove any remaining shine. ""

My advice: a lint roll is £ 1 from Tesco, but you can currently get one on sale at B&Q for just 50p.

Prosecc-ho, ho, ho: Henry says, "If white wine or prosecco is spilled on the carpet, try to clean the spill up with a dry cloth or paper towel as soon as possible. Then use a mixture of two cups of warm water, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and one tablespoon of dish soap. Apply gradually, take a clean cloth and let the stain dry until it begins to disappear. ""

My advice: Instead of paying 97 pence for a 433 ml bottle of ASDA Fairy Liquid, buy a 1 liter bottle of Aldi Magnum Dishwashing Liquid for 68 pence. It does the job just as well.

Elbow Grease: Henry says, "There are many ways to remove red wine stains from carpets. The most popular is to apply WD-40 to the carpet and rub it to remove most of the stain. You will then need to use a steam cleaner to remove the WD-40. ""

My advice: the Beldray 10-in-1 handheld steam cleaner is £ 24 from Wilko, but you can currently buy it for £ 19.96 from Asda.
