Your paddle brushes collect dirt, oil from your scalp, loose hair, dead skin cells, and bacteria as you brush them through your curls. It's not nice to think about, but it happens. You can even see it if there has been enough time without cleaning. Your hair may be covered in a film of wax (made from the product and oils), or you may even see clumps like lint, which is actually a build-up of dead skin cells, dirt, and environmental influences. Yes.
But it's just the gross factor that should get you to clean your hairbrush. To start with, cleaning your brush regularly will extend the life of your tool. (Some brushes can be quite expensive, so no small reason.)
But more urgent: it's much better for your hair. "A clean brush means less damage to your hair and less bacteria on your brush," says Michael Bowman, stylist at Rob Peetoom in Brooklyn. Physical damage can result in breakage, split ends, and frizz, which is why a clean brush can result in healthy, manageable hair.
