Imagine Boxing Day, will the recycle bins be overflowing with even more cardboard? Will the floor be littered with mountains of empty boxes filled with all the toys, gifts, and online Christmas boxes? Will our local dealers dispose of the additional empty containers?
Our teams regularly face irresponsible waste. While some people go to the recycling center, many do not use the trash cans properly and instead use the land. The boxes then become contaminated and cannot be recycled and are costly for the district to clean.
Loose trash flies through your neighborhood on a windy day and rots in December weather, causing damage and pollution.
Additionally, leaving trash on the floor is a crime and you could be stepping into an expensive New Year with a solid £ 400 fine plus court fees.
What should you do when you show up to recycle your unwanted packaging at a recycling location and run out of space? Here are some helpful tips before the holiday season:
- Use your red recycling bag / container provided by Thanet District Council
- Divide the boxes into containers / bags to maximize space for others
- Take items home with you when the bin is full to empty, or reserve a spot at the recycling and recycling center
- If you are a licensed distributor, just use your business waste
- Please remember to reuse the items if you can before purchasing any products
- Contact us for help and advice, by sending an e-mail to streetcene.enforcement@thanet.gov.uk send
- Report violations of fly and litter pollution at https://www.thanet.gov.uk/services/clean-streets/
- Use only an authorized waste carrier and do a quick check on the environmental agency's website www.GOV.UK to find a landfill carrier . A legitimate waste operator will be happy to show you their license. Be careful and cautious of anyone who only accepts cash payments or advertises on social media websites
- Reserve Bulky Trash Collection, a service run by the local council, on 01 843 577115 https://www.thanet.gov.uk/online-services/bulky-waste-collection/
Benefits of doing it right:
- save energy
- Reduce landfill
- Protect the wildlife
- Better for the economy
- Help fight climate change
Let's work together and think about a greener and cleaner 2021. A good starting point is to dispose of your recycling responsibly and avoid additional costs.
Keep Thanet clean and dispose of the packaging responsibly. Together we can keep our neighborhoods clean and tidy.
Merry Christmas,
Cllr Steve Albon
