Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) is expected to begin cleaning sewers in communities across the county before the end of the month.
Kingston Mayor Senator and Councilman Delroy Williams said the venture is expected to cost around $100 million.
The Flood Reduction Program is part of KSAMC's annual preparation activities for the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30.
Mayor Williams, providing details at the Society's monthly meeting Tuesday, June 14, in downtown Kingston, said the exercise will be conducted in phases, with critical coastal runoff being prioritized first.
"Typically we start with cleaning critical coastal drains, then move to critical off-shore drains, and then do general drainage cleaning throughout the community," he said.
The mayor reported that the drain cleaning drill will continue throughout the hurricane season. "We're constantly checking, particularly critical coastal drains... throughout the season," he said.
Mayor Williams said that while the country has been spared major storms in recent years, climate change and its associated impacts are already weighing on small island nations.
"We continue to prepare for such an eventuality as best we can with the limited resources we have," he said.
