Lynchburg experts share simple, essential tips on how to beat extreme heat

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Finding ways to combat high heat and humidity isn't always easy, but Bedford Fire Chief Todd Stone says staying cool is key.

"The most important thing right now is staying hydrated and trying to stay out of the main heat of the day and getting some exercise morning and night," Stone said.

When it comes to making sure your kids enjoy a playground, Lynchburg Parks and Rec 's Maggie Mace recommends inspecting metal equipment so they don't burn your child's skin.

"Check first and do a touch test because they can get very hot when they're in the sun," said Mace, manager of recreational services for Lynchburg Parks and Rec.

For our four-legged friends, the Lynchburg Humane Society recommends taking them for a walk early in the morning or late at night when it's cooler. If you go out at lunchtime, your pet's paws could get hurt.

"[paws are] as delicate as our feet; So with asphalt, you can put your hand on it, and if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your feet," said Claire LeFew, events and communications manager for the Lynchburg Humane Society.

These tips seem simple, but they can save lives.

"We're in deadly heat if you work too hard and you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing," Stone said.

Stone added that if you feel dizzy or sick, you should go inside, drink water and possibly see a doctor, as these are early signs of heat stress.
