Bookmark Childcare Tips; where to take old flags for retirement - KNBN NewsCenter1

RAPID CITY, SD – June 14 is nationally recognized as Flag Day, honoring the day Congress agreed on the design and color of the American flag in 1777.

Because the original design represented all 13 colonies, there were over 25 variations prior to the current look. And as patriotic as it is to fly the flag, it's also important to consider status.

Here in the Black Hills, wind and weather conditions can cause flags to degrade faster than normal. When flags start to fade or look weathered, places like a local VFW offer opportunities to safely remove old flags.

"It's just a mark of respect for him that he's duly retiring. It's a completely free service," explained Petty Officer and Chaplaincy Katherine Pyka. "We have our box right in front of our entrance. Just leave it and we'll make sure it's removed.

The VFW is open on Mondays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Other places residents can remove their flags in Rapid City include the American Legion and Boy Scouts of America, the Black Hills Area Council.
