Wouldn't it be great to walk into your garage and feel relaxed instead of stressed? Garages often end up as makeshift storage spaces used for all that clutter that people don't want in their homes. But when you organize your garage, you'll find everything you need a lot faster and it'll look a lot better too. Use these five simple tips to free up space and keep your tools organized and safe.
Put nuts and bolts in old pill bottles
Loose screws, wayward fasteners, and tricky washers left over from recent projects and ready-to-assemble furniture kits can quickly get out of hand (or just plain lost) in your garage. A clever solution: take some old pill bottles and label each one with what's inside. Small bins are the perfect size for storing nails, screws, nuts, bolts and other DIY supplies.
Large tools neatly stowed away with a pool float
If brooms, rakes, brush cutters, and other bulky tools are always tipping over, grab a float to keep them streamlined and upright, suggests organizer Jeneva Aaron, founder of The House Wire . "It's a smart way to use vertical space and ensure all your tools look neat." Here's how: Simply cut a pool noodle in half, then cut slits for the tool handles to slide in, and tape the "tool noodle" to your garage wall. Do!
Organize your garden essentials with this essential cabinet.
Over the door shoe organizers are great for keeping all the tools you need to show off your green thumb organized and easy to find. "Packets of seeds, gloves, popsicles, and even bottles of bug spray and sunscreen all fit nicely in the little bags," notes Tidy My Space organizer Brenda Scott. "Just look for a shoe organizer with clear compartments so you can see everything at a glance."
Disentangle stubborn pipes with a hanging bucket
Instead of tangling hoses and cords in a storage bin, wrap them around an old bucket or paint can, advises professional organizer Sandy Magura . "The bucket holds the hose in place and prevents it from twisting or kinking." Then hang the bucket by its handle on a wall hook to keep it tidy and out of the way.
Simply store salt and soil in stackable plastic buckets
Leftover road salt and half-empty bags of potting soil can make a mess on your garage floor. "But plastic containers with closable lids are really handy for storing these items," says Scott. Simply pour the contents of each sachet into its own container and secure the lid. "Closable buckets prevent salt and sand from clumping together in humid air."
