Cleaning after the flood? The NB government has these tips to help

After the catastrophic floods that New Brunswick experienced this month, the waters continue to decline. At the beginning of the refurbishment, the New Brunswick government prepared safety tips for those who begin the purification process.

The province recommends that New Brunswickers clear their land as soon as the floods are clear and secure.

"Experience has shown that a quick start to the cleaning process can help reduce the loss and damage to property," said the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) in a statement.

The EMO says that once people are able to enter the properties, they must remove the walls and insulation soaked in water to allow the room and nails to dry completely.

The water-soaked insulation is no longer effective, while the walls of plaster, gypsum or wood can be dried in time.

For safe removal and cleaning, the province recommends the following security measures:

  • Wear protective equipment, including gloves, goggles and goggles, to protect the eyes, mouth and skin during cleaning.
  • All items that have been flooded with water and can not be completely cleaned and dried within 24 to 48 hours should be taken outside.
  • Take photos of discarded items to submit insurance claims.
  • Open all doors and windows during work and leave them open when you leave the house, if possible.
  • If power can be safely used, use fans and dehumidifiers to remove moisture.
  • In particular, do not mix bleach and ammonia as this may produce toxic fumes.
  • Dry the house and everything quickly, within 24 to 48 hours if possible.

If you're trying to get rid of the sandbags used during flood prevention, the New Brunswick Environment Department encourages people to organize pick-ups or sandbags at the local landfill.

If unavailable, the province says the New Brunswick people can get rid of sandbags as part of their flood-related remains.

Free flood cleaning kits

The Canadian Red Cross offers flood protection kits to the citizens of the province, who can now safely return home. The kits, which are limited to one per household, are contained in a plastic container filled with 20 liters of useful items such as mop, broom, squeegee, brush, gloves, masks, trash bags and cleaning.

The free kits can also be picked up at their offices at 120 MacDonald Street located in Saint John, NB and 318 Maple Street in Fredericton, NB, 8:30 to 7:00 pm, even on the weekends.

"If residents find that their homes have accumulated sewage, they should wear rubber boots and waterproof gloves when they come in contact with water and during cleaning," said Cross. Red in a statement.
