The Hawthorne Fire Chief offers safe BBQ tips

HAWTHORNE, NJ - After a long, harsh winter, many residents of Hawthorne are ready to enjoy the arrival of spring. A spring that sometimes seems to be a hybrid between the July heat and allergies, can not break the spirits of the sweaty community, anxious to sit in your icy winter Old Meat and keep it there.

And with the warm weather and the longest hours of light comes one of the most venerable traditions of spring: the grill. Barbecue means participation in activities linking older than humanity has connected with family and friends, as they have learned to walk properly, to harness the power of fire and always to change our physical condition and our social dynamics.

Although the typical inhabitants of Hawthorne do not necessarily handle meat and vegetables fished or bred, unless you said that the suburban version of the hunter gatherers back to the XXI century, the other risks accompany a barbeque.

The fire and the food, in harmony, make a nice day with family and friends. But out of balance, the consequences can be catastrophic or even deadly. As the season approaches BBQ, TAP Hawthorne Hawthorne's Fire Chief Joseph Speranza talked about what residents can do to have a safe barbecue.

One method, he says, is easy maintenance. "The most common call for getting us oiled on a grill. It can be very dangerous. The best way to avoid fat burning is to clean the drip tray ".

Cleaning a grille may seem obvious, but it is a task that is often overlooked. The Hawthorne Fire Department reported fires caused by fat in unrefined ovens; Barbecuing is no exception. As you are out there and the barbecue is mostly a seasonal activity, you can sometimes ignore the oily and sticky threat that hides under the embers. "Two years ago, we had a fire on the porch caused by a supposed barbecue," said Speranza. "Barbeque fires can be pretty intimidating."

The heat generated by a grill can cause the ignition of fat, causing a great fire and a lot of heat, such as in an oven or in an oven. Water should never be thrown on a grease fire. The effect could result in overflow of spatters and flames over a wide range. A fire extinguisher for the home is a great investment and can erase a major threat if used properly. Speranza said that round weaving barbecues have often caught fire for negligence. "Scrape the grill, clean the tray, everything that needs to be cleaned."

For gas grills, Speranza also recommends checking the fuel hose. "Sometimes the propane gas pipeline breaks and erodes," he said. Dry rubber rifling or wear over time can cause a crack in the gas line that can cause a propane fire. "Common sense, with proper cleaning and inspection of the props, is really an economical solution," said Speranza, in case a line was damaged.
