Cleaning the channels is a task many forget.
You have to do it twice a year, once in the fall and in the spring.
"It's very important to keep them clean as they can absorb and accumulate a lot of energy, which can lead to rot and putrefaction," said Allison Leep, business development and channels director at PEMCO. "It could also lead to leaks that could damage our view, our base and even get into the walls."
If you're thinking about cleaning the channels yourself, here are 10 safety tips:
- Always have someone with you
- Use a stable and good ladder
- Set the base for each 4-foot lift on one foot
- Look at overhead lines
- Never trust the leader against the canal
- Do not sit up and hold your belt buckle between the rails
- Wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges
- Never hang on a gutter for support
- Scoop, instead of flying the remains
- Connect the downpipes so that they are not clogged with dirt. These are pipes that carry rainwater from a roof to a drain or floor.
"It's looking for decay and decay," Leep said. "Suppose you need to fix your gutter system when you move away from the roof, you also have a good idea of how the waterdrop system is clogged and sometimes it's an important part of your channel maintenance."
Climbing on a ladder can be dangerous. According to PEMCO, about 100,000 people land in emergency departments every year due to the decline in size.
You can buy gutter gadgets online to stay on the ladder.
"We want you to know that some of these products are tested in conditions that are different from those that you could have at home, so remember," Leep said.
If you want someone else to do the work, let them investigate before you hire them. Many window cleaners offer channel cleaning so you can save money with a package.
