Expert tips to keep your watch and jewelry collections alive and safe
A collection of fine watches and jewelry is not just a treasure trove of exquisite creations that add glamor and shine to an outfit; the pieces it contains can be mementos of important milestones or ongoing legacies. We've put together expert advice on safe storage to ensure your collections stay in the best possible condition for generations to come.
Since diamonds are incredibly hard, keeping them in the same compartment as your other jewelry can damage precious metals and stones such as rubies and sapphires and even other diamond jewelry. "You have to make sure that the pieces do not touch each other as much as possible, since one piece of jewelry can unintentionally damage another," advises Jonathan J. Abram, Managing Director of Ronald Abram.

It is best to keep each watch and each piece of jewelry separately in soft bags. "We recommend customers keep jewelry in the brand's original packaging as it is designed with the right materials and protection," explains Arnaud Bastien, President and CEO of Graff Diamonds Asia.
If you'd prefer to keep all of your pieces in one box, do an inventory of your collection first. "If you have more than 20 parts, I suggest that you group them into categories. That makes it easier to find parts, "says Abram. "When it comes to materials, you have to look for cases with soft and protective fabrics, because jewelry can be delicate. "
Also, make sure that jewelry boxes, both inside and out, are regularly cleaned with a soft cloth to remove dust.
"The best place to keep your jewelry is in a safe. If you don't have a safe, we recommend using a bank safe, "says Abram.
Make sure the safe is out of sight and out of the common areas of your home. When opening your safe, be sure to draw the curtains if there are windows nearby. The safe should be kept in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
