WAYNE COUNTY, Michigan - Passers-by in the Detroit metropolitan area posted a notice of illegal disposal .
The problem now is that after bad weather, people can throw away their ruined items instead of properly disposing of them.
If you drive almost every street in Detroit, you'll find items along the street that were destroyed by recent flooding. Some people take these ruined items and throw them elsewhere.
A Help Me Hank volunteer recently reported illegal dumping behind a body shop on 8 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue.
Al Oleszko is the owner of Nortown Collision & Glass Co. He discovered the wreckage after someone dumped his storm-damaged items behind his shop.
"You heard a truck in the alley. I went out to see what was going on and there was no license plate and they threw garbage, "said Oleszko. "If they had put it in front of their house, they would have picked it up at a reasonable time."
Detroit will have special pick-up options, and residents will be able to leave destroyed items on the curb without worrying about fines.
"Put your rubble on the sidewalk now," said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
