TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - For fun in the sun, there are some pointers to keep in mind before entering the water.
As the temperature rises, so does the number of people entering the pool doors.
"We've certainly had a lot of customers over the past two weeks because it was hot, the first few weeks were a little slow because it rained and thunderstorms, but it's finally getting better and it's really good, see," said Kyler Lamb.
But just because you cool off in the water doesn't mean you shouldn't ignore the other safety tips.
Blaisdell's assistant principal shared a few things to be aware of.
"Put on sunscreen and stay hydrated, you need to drink plenty of water when these temperatures get too hot to stay cool and safe," Lamm said.
The Shawnee County Pool and Aquatic Center staff work very hard to ensure that the pools are clean and safe for the community.
"Our pool opening hours are from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily and our guards arrive around 11:30 a.m. to start some opening tasks such as cleaning the pool in advance. In the end we have to clean and we clean the bathrooms and disinfect everything, we clear away all the chairs and all the pipes and we lock it up, "said Lamm.
Every lifeguard who signs up to watch the pool has been trained to know what to do in different situations.
"You have to do a certification course of around 20 hours and that is a lot of swimming and backboarding, savings and routines that you have to do every day," he said.
