Fire department gives advice on barbecue safety

Firefighters recommend barbecuing outdoors on a sturdy surface that is away from structures.

"It's best to keep doors at least ten feet away from buildings," said Jeremy Lopez, a firefighter with the Duluth Fire Department.

Also, firefighters say you should never leave a burning grill unattended and always have a fire extinguisher nearby to put out a potential fire.

"Always remember not to use water on a fat fire," said Lopez. "It can be caused by larger cuts of meat."

Grills also need frequent cleaning, but can stay hot for up to an hour after use, so let them cool down first.

"Maintain the grill until you clean it, be it two or three times a year, or if you're really ambitious, maybe after each use," said Lopez.

Clothing can catch fire too, so firefighters recommend that you do not wear baggy clothing when barbecuing.
