A simple guide on how to wash your comforter and keep it fluffy

We all know the importance of washing our sheets and pillowcases, but if an item in a bedroom is missed during the weekly or biweekly wash cycles , this is the most popular quilt. While dry cleaning is a great option if you want to make sure you don't shrink, there are really safe (and cheaper!) Ways to wash and dry it yourself. Of course, you definitely don't want to shorten the life of a quilt or quilt by washing it over, but it does need to be machine washed occasionally; Try this one to three times a year, depending on the type of fabric . And things like whether or not you have a pet hogging the bed.

And who doesn't love to fall asleep under a freshly cleaned, quilted duvet? We asked for the enthusiast, the cleaning and professional The Laundry Evangelist, Patric Richardson, what is the best protocol for washing a blanket. Follow her simple tips ahead of time to help you fall asleep happily tonight, wrapped in a cleaner duvet.

Step one: charging

Read all labels first and see if your down comforter can be put in the washing machine or if professional dry cleaning is recommended. If you don't need the latter, take your duvet with you to the laundry room! A top loader works fine if that's all you have, but a front loader will make it a lot easier for you. Now put on the quilt, preferably only so as not to overload the machine.

Step two: add soap

Use soap or lint, do not use commercially available cleaning agents. This is because very heavy detergents weigh down the comforter and make it difficult for the feathers to dry. Lumpy comforters aren't that soft and comfortable. There are many options in drug stores that work. Just be sure to check out products marketed for down comforters or delicate items like Woolite, or use a specialty soap like The Laundress Wool Cashmere Shampoo when you're ready to splurge. And remember, a little soap is very good for you. Since this will be the only part of the machine, you won't be sure not to overdo it.

Step 3: Choose the time

To determine the time, select the regular wash cycle. If you are concerned about damaging your down comforter, you can choose a medium to slow spin setting.

Step four: adjust the temperature

For the temperature, choose a hot program with a cold rinse and make sure it rinses well. If your device does not offer this combination, it is best to choose the coldest setting.

Step five: dry it

When it's time to dry the comforter, add a tennis ball and choose warm heat. Make sure the time is set to a slower spin but a longer drying time. As mentioned above, a damp duvet creates lumps, so make sure it isn't the slightest bit damp before taking it out of the dryer. But before you dry it, check to see if it's a real down comforter or a down alternative (like a hypoallergenic comforter). If you use the latter, be sure to dry it off without the heat setting.
