With heating recommendations for parts of Louisiana during the hot summer months, energy companies have some tips to help their customers reduce their energy usage.
cooling
- If possible, set the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher. Cleco recommends a smart thermostat as it will automatically adjust the temperature according to the programmed temperature settings.
- Use a fan to make a room feel 10 degrees cooler, but remember that fans cool people, not rooms. Therefore, switch off the fans when you are not in a room.
- Do not operate any device that generates heat during the hottest part of the day.
- Close curtains or blinds during the day to avoid heat.
- Change your air filter. A dirty filter slows airflow and makes the system work harder to keep homes and businesses cool and to waste energy.
- Seal leaks around homes and businesses with caulk or weather strip to keep the air fresh inside.
Household appliances and electronics
- Let dishwashers and washing machines run at full load to save water and energy.
- Unplug electronic devices such as toasters, cell phone chargers, game consoles, and printers when you are not using them. These devices consume electricity even when they are switched off because they are still plugged in.
turn on
- Turn off the lights that you don't use
- Replace traditional lightbulbs with LEDs, which use around 75% less energy and emit less heat than traditional lightbulbs.
"In the summer months, and especially when temperatures remain high on consecutive days, an increase in energy consumption is normal," says Jaci Sewell, Cleco's manager for energy efficiency. "These tips are easy to implement and can make a difference in how much energy you use and how much you save."
Entergy shared the following tips to reduce energy costs:
- Set your thermostat to 78 degrees or the highest comfortable temperature. Any grade below 78 can add up to 3% to your bill. If you turn the air conditioning down to 72 degrees cooler, you've already increased your bill by 18%.
- Buy a programmable thermostat. As energy consumption increases, so do costs.
- Use fans to keep yourself cool, but remember that fans cool people, not rooms. Ceiling fans, box fans, and oscillating fans use very little power to circulate the air, which makes it feel several degrees cooler. To save more energy, turn them off when you leave the room.
- Close blinds, shades, and drapes to keep out the sun and fresh air. Also, close the air conditioning vents in rooms that are not in use.
- Seal cracks and holes around doors, windows and ducts. Sealing and caulking help keep cold air in and hot air out.
- Make sure the air entering your home is clean and healthy. The air filters on some air conditioners need to be cleaned or replaced monthly. You can also have your air conditioner checked to make sure your system is tuned and working as efficiently as possible.
