METRO DETROIT, (WXYZ) - Heavy rains are expected in southeast Michigan on Tuesday, and the Detroit Department of Water and Sewer (DWSD) is reminding residents to do their part to reduce the risk of flooding.
Here are some tips from the Detroit Water and Sewer Service for residents and businesses.
Reduce the effects of flooding with these tips
- Make sure valuables are kept several feet above the basement.
- Keep valuables in airtight containers; and, if possible, transport valuables upstairs before and during rainy events.
- Check the basement drains to make sure they are not clogged and that there are no items to cover in case they are needed if water leaks into the basement.
- Clean your gutters and make sure your downspouts aren't blocked. Help your neighbors do the same, especially the elderly and the disabled.
- Clean up leaves, trash, and other debris on and around sinks near your home or business.
- Move parked cars over gutters and make sure items like trash cans and recycling bins are not over rain drains.
- Stay away from standing water in your basement or lower floor of your house if there are appliances, plugs, and a fuse box in that area.
If you find a backup in the basement, be careful, take pictures and sign DWSD within 45 days after the incident any damage .
Residents can also report road flooding using the SeeClickFix "Improve Detroit" mobile app for Apple and Android devices. Via Facebook message at www.facebook.com/DWSDDetroit or by phone at 313-267-8000.
Based on the forecast, the DWSD has already planned extended working hours for its employees. The teams are monitoring flood-prone areas and are ready to respond to flooding by cleaning the sewer system and basins if necessary, and pumping water from city streets to areas where it is not receding and is not a problem with the water.
DWSD contractors are also on hold.
