UTICA - As the summer season draws to a close, many are starting to clean yards and houses in preparation for the cold months to come.
The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority is reminding residents of Oneida and Herkimer counties that the regional household hazardous waste facility on Leland Avenue will close in two weeks.
The last day residents can bring paint and chemicals for disposal is Thursday September 30th. The facility will reopen on April 1st, 2022.
The agency operates EcoDrop Utica, 80 Leland Ave. Extension. Opened Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
EcoDrop Rome (no hazardous waste accepted), 575 Perimeter Road. Opened Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The authority encourages reuse before disposal. There are several locations and organizations in Oneida and Herkimer counties that accept used items as donations for reuse or recycling. Visit www.ohswa.org for a list of acceptable organizations and articles.
"Many items that you find during the autumn cleaning are recyclable, but have to be delivered to our facilities for operational or safety reasons. This includes items like paint, chemicals, propane tanks, and bulky rigid plastics, "said Samantha Brown, the agency's recycling coordinator. "The quality of recyclable materials is an important part of the success of recycling programs, so it is important to follow guidelines and properly dispose of waste during cleanups across the region," he continued.
If you are unsure how to properly recycle or dispose of an item, the AMF recommends residents visit their easy-to-use tool at www.AmIRecyclable.com to search hundreds of different articles and find all the answers.
