It can be rainy and windy in Everett this weekend.

With the first major storm of the season slated for this weekend, Everett Public Works offers tips to help community members prepare for and minimize heavy seasonal rains that can lead to flooding.

What to do now before a storm

  • Identify nearby trees that could fall in a storm. If possible, take the necessary steps to eliminate them.
  • Avoid gardening debris like leaves and sticks building up in your yard, on the sidewalk, or on the street where it could end up in the city's sewers. Keep it in a garden trash can or other container.
  • Use a rake or broom to remove leaves and debris from bog rust and rainwater inlets, then place the material in your garden bin.
  • Extend downspouts away from your home. Do not connect downspouts to your side sewer.
  • If you have a check valve, check that it works and that it is properly seated. Watch the city check valve maintenance video .
  • Watch the City of Everett's Fall Stormwater Tips video .

What to do in a storm

  • If an inlet or sump grate appears clogged with debris, try opening a safe channel to clear a path for drainage.
  • If you have a check valve and it has rained heavily for a short period of time, wait 10-15 minutes after you finish before using the plumbing (toilet, dishwasher, sink, shower, washing machine) in your home. This allows larger amounts of water to be drained off.
  • If you want to control the runoff on your property, sandbags can help. Bring your own shovel to one of the free self- serve sandbags on 4015 Railway Ave.
  • To report water, sewer, or other storm-related issues, call the City of Everett 24-hour Dispatch Service at 425-257-8821.

What to do if your basement is flooded

  • First of all, you weaken and protect your property.
  • Call the Public Works Bureau 24/7 at 425-257-8821.
  • Carefully document the site by taking photos and detailing all of the elements to provide a complete description of everything.
  • Remove all wet objects, including carpets if necessary.
  • Dry the area before odors and / or mold become a problem.
  • The city recommends using a professional cleaning company for cleaning and disinfection. If you decide to do this yourself, read the information sheet from the health department on basement cleaning .
  • If you believe the City of Everett to be responsible for your basement flood, you can file a claim for damages .
