NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WTVF) - As freezing temperatures rise and fall, plumbers and water remediation experts are reminding Tennessee residents to take steps to keep their homes and commercial properties dry.
The owner Servepro, Robert Dixon, said the calls started by the low temperatures on Thursday of snowfall rain .
"It can be a disaster. So I'd say it's just an ounce of prevention and cure because it can handle the headache, clean up water damage, dry out a house, do all the repairs," he explained. "Nobody expects these things to happen. Nobody wants these things to happen, but they do."
Here are four tips for protecting the pipes outside of your home or building:
- Disconnect garden hoses
- Wrap the outside taps
- Seal pipes where they enter the building
- Drain buried sprinkler systems
"Outwardly, the most important thing you can do is probably your faucets," said Dixon. "Cover your faucets with the little covers you can buy on Amazon or Lowe, turn your faucets on, you know how to set a reminder on your phone every October 30th to go out and put it on and, you know, it are three or $ 4 each. . And that can help prevent damage so your outdoor fittings don't freeze and explode, causing damage in confined spaces or around the house.
Here are three tips for protecting pipes in your home or building:
- Let the faucets drain so that the water continues to flow through the pipes when the temperature is below zero
- Cabinet doors open in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Turn off the water system and drain it if you will be away for several days.
"We get a lot of calls on Sunday evenings when people come home from vacation and say, 'Hey, it happened,'" Dixon said. And if I had to choose one, "of everything I've said, you'd probably have to drain the pipes just to get the water in the pipes so it doesn't freeze and cause that damage, and that's the least of the hassle on the list .
