Adding humidifiers and air purifiers can help with dry and dirty indoor air, but they take a little love. Consumer Reports experts reveal the secrets to keeping humidifiers and air purifiers clean and performing at their best.
To keep your humidifier cool, always follow the manufacturer's instructions, which typically include daily and weekly maintenance.
Here are some general guidelines from Consumer Reports (CR):
Rinse the tank daily, dry it with a towel, and fill it with clean water.
Thoroughly clean your humidifier with vinegar every week. Remove the container and add a cup of vinegar to the bottom pan. Use a cleaning tool or toothbrush to get into the cracks and scrub off any tartar build-up. Then rinse well.
To clean the tank, fill it with a cup of vinegar and a cup of water and let it sit for about 20 minutes, giving it a couple of good blows as you go. Then rinse well and dry with a towel. And be sure to replace the filter or wick according to the instruction manual.
If your current humidifier is difficult to clean, it may be time to change.
Change the filters regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you have an air purifier with a permanent filter, carefully vacuum it with the brush head about once a month. Some permanent filters can also be washed, but check your manual here too!
If you don't have an air purifier, according to Consumer Reports, you can improve indoor air quality by vacuuming regularly and limiting smoke from indoor wood fires, candles, and incense.
