Clean up the Christmas garbage and go green into the New Year - KXLY

SPOKANE, Washington - The holiday season is over and now it's time to clean up!

From throwing away paper and gift boxes to removing defective lamps - where does it all happen?

That can be recycled:

  • Most wrapping paper
  • Paper boxes
  • carton
  • Glasses and bottles

That should be thrown away:

  • Aluminum wrapping paper
  • Metallic ribbons and ties
  • Polystyrene
  • Boxes lined with plastic
  • Christmas lights
  • Bubble wrap

Things that are destroyed go to the Spokane waste-to-power plant. From there it is converted into energy in the form of electricity.

Christmas trees must also be thrown away before they become a fire hazard, but they don't burn like trash.

The week of Monday January 3 through Friday January 7 is the last week to pick up roadside Christmas trees in Spokane, but you can drop them off at the WTE factory for a small fee.

The trees are taken to a commercial composting facility. Just make sure they have no lights or decorations and are less than six feet tall.

It's also a new year with new laws that will help save waste across the state.

Like the ban on plastic bags, limiting utensils to the single-use items is one way to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in a landfill.

If you're looking to be more sustainable in 2022, Kris Major of the city's waste department advises saying "no" to plastic cutlery, straws and spice packs. Just use yours!

You can also keep a heavy duty utensil kit with a cloth towel and a reusable straw in your purse or glove box in case you need it.
