CASPER, Wyoming (Wyoming News Now) - Heaters are an increased risk of fire in homes in winter. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates that heating devices come into play in one in seven house fires and one in five deaths from a house fire.
"I think one of the best things to point out about this time of year is that during the winter months, December, January and February, nearly half of all residential fires occur in a year," said Casper. Fire Engineer Andrew Sundell.
According to the fire brigade, chimneys and chimneys should be cleaned and inspected annually by a specialist. Should you stand in the way of professional cleaning, fireplace brushes are available to borrow free of charge at Fire Station 1 on David Street.
Sundell says that cooled ashes from chimneys should be placed in a metal container and soaked in water before disposal.
Casper Fire encourages the replacement of old radiators. They say look for heaters that turn off automatically when you don't get up. Older radiators without this function can burn nearby furniture or start a fire if they tip over.
The Department also recommends using wall plugs instead of extension cords for permanent or frequently used equipment. When using electrical outlets, only one device that generates heat should be connected at a time.
"Just make sure they are plugged into an electrical outlet. If this is necessary, you may need an electrician to install a new electrical outlet, but this is the safest way to ensure your home is warm and fireproof, "said Sundell.
