PEARL RIVER, NY -- As Saturday's heatwave continues, Orange & Rockland Utilities offers sensible tips to help residents feel more comfortable while saving on energy bills:
- Turn down or turn off the air conditioning in your home while you're away.
- Set your air conditioner to the highest temperature that your comfort and health will allow.
- Close all doors and windows in your home while the air conditioner is on.
- Cook, bake, or do other household chores that generate heat and humidity during the coolest hours of the day and night.
- Close curtains and blinds to block out the sun and the heat of the day.
- View your energy consumption and personalized energy saving tips in your online account at www.oru.com/myaccount .
If you experience a power outage, don't assume that O&R will automatically know about it. You can report it and check when your lights will come back on:
- via the website .
- via the O&R mobile app from your iPhone, iPad or Android device.
- by SMS with the word "OUT" to 69678 (myORU) or
- by phone at 1-877-434-4100.
According to O&R, heat, humidity and increased power requirements to run air conditioners can cause problems with the electrical distribution system and, in some cases, cause electrical equipment to overheat and cause isolated power outages. The utility says its crews will be ready to respond to any problems that arise to make repairs and restore service. To prepare for peak power demand this summer, O&R says it has made investments totaling more than $144 million this year to strengthen and improve the reliability of its electrical system. This is in addition to the nearly $1 billion that O&R has invested in power system reliability and maintenance projects over the past 10 years.
