I'm on a roll. Recently shared tips on caring for quilts and other textiles, and now I have a few other good tips to share their collections in order to maintain healthy antiques.
Although I have not tried to know I people who have to give them the opportunity, if they have any problems you meet.
- In order to remove the traces of an ancient whitewater finish to combine petrolatum and sifted ashes from your fireplace into a paste. Apply to markers in a circular motion, gently the dough into the surface with a cloth. With careful application disappear the rings. Wax or varnish on the entire surface after completion. Dark spots indicate timber is damaged, this procedure is not.
- To clean the tarnished brass or copper, a small amount of cleaning fluid and a cloth Cup. Wear gloves because the acid cleaner is harsh on the skin. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and soap, rinse. For polishing brass and copper, a paste of equal parts of salt, flour and vinegar. Rub again rinse with a soft cloth and skin. Shines with a cloth or a soft, dry surface.
- To mold damage paint or old photos hanging on an outside wall to avoid, add a sheet of plastic foil or plastic on the back of the frame, of a vapor barrier.
- The porous ceramic and iron ore with bleach wig, which can be obtained from a beauty salon, to be cleaned. Some say the hot iron ore whey soaking remove stains. I did it with success tablets prosthesis in ceramic bowls and teapots.
- To eliminate musty odors of the old cabinets, chests, cabinets or other items, cover the floor with several layers of newspaper and cover the area with baking soda, cat litter or charcoal chips. Odors be included in one or two weeks.
- Storage of porcelain plates with a plate of soft paper between each cheap. This protects the wear plates and broken. It is a good point of packaging.
- Never store quilts and other textiles in wooden boxes, wooden shelves or in boxes. Wood is acidic and causes dark spots in the tissue formed and begin to break the fibers. What you thought was an oxide or bloodstain is probably an acid stain wood. No need to mothballs for cotton, either. Use mothballs for wool.
- Remember that sunlight is an old enemy. Cloth, wood, paper and ink react to UV light and lose pigment over time. If you have a valuable antique near a window, cover with a water jet or a sheet during the day. Remove the society, then cover again. This practice is like a lot of work, but worsen save its antiquities.
- When handling silver wear cotton gloves. Gloves block the oils and acids in the skin and keep tarnish his songs. Wash the cotton gloves after each use. They are inexpensive and can be found in a camera store supply.
- Pieces of ivory, horn and marble can be wiped clean with a soft brush or a soft cloth. To avoid screen in direct sunlight, make as dry and brittle.
