Waterloo Fire Rescue with BBQ safety tips for the first spring weekend

If you want to start grilling this weekend, do not forget to make it safe.

Waterloo Fire Rescue came with a warning to make sure your grill is in good condition before you turn it on.

If you're having a BBQ this weekend, John Percy of Waterloo Fire Rescue asks you to do a 50/50 soap and water test to check for leaks in your propane tank.

"Turn on the grill tank yourself and apply your solution and see if you see bubbles, if there are bubbles it means you have a leak so it does not appear on the grill Drain the tank and the hose reconnect and check the tank again with the solution and if you do not see any bubbles, it's safe. "

Percy adds that when you go to the barbecue, do it outside, not in your garage, and store propane in front of your house or in a shed in the backyard.

If you make a spring cleaning around your house, Percy also recommends cleaning behind the fridge and stove and removing dust to avoid fire hazards.

Light your grill

  • Turn on a gas grill with a match that is already lit when the lid is open and before the propane is lit.

Location of your grill

  • Keep away from combustible elements such as wooden fences, overhangs and shrubs.
Never put a grill in it
Never use a barbecue in the house or in a garage

Storage and transport

  • Keep propane gas bottles upright and in a well-ventilated area, outdoors or in a shed
  • When transporting, insert a plastic poppet into the gas outlet
  • Acune the tank on the floor in the back of the car with the window open or save it in the trunk

leaks

  • The smell of rotten eggs or boiled cabbage may indicate a leak
  • Test the Soap Test: With the grill valve turned off and the valve connected to the bottle, apply a soap solution to all accessories and tubing. When the bubbles appear and grow, you have a leak
  • First switch off the shut-off valve and then the grill control

interview

  • Clean your grill every year
  • Keep the burner free of dust and cobwebs
  • Check the connection between the grill hose and the cylinder; Replace it if it is broken, cracked or bent
  • Use a wrench to connect a propane cylinder
  • Pull out the small holes of the burner with a nail or clip and check the corrosion of the burner and replace it when it is rusted.
  • Propane cylinders must be re-certified every 10 years

Steps to clearing barbecue fires

  • Use a fire separator
  • Do not try to extinguish a big fire with water: it will spread fire
