While public health officials are issuing hygiene recommendations to combat the new corona virus, Marin cleaning companies say they have started targeting areas of the home that are most likely to contain germs.

"We are considering disinfecting door handles, light switches, stair handrails, countertops, surfaces, and areas that are more likely to be affected and spread germs," said Sean Terheyden. , Owner of MaidPro Marin with his wife Cambria.

This week, MaidPro added a "High Touch Point" service that is designed to provide a faster and less expensive way to disinfect high traffic areas. Cleaning services in the Marin area also reported an increase in requests for additional cleaning by customers in frequently affected areas of the home.

"In fact, our reserves are accelerating somewhat," said Mark Buchl, project manager at Organic Cleaning Marin.

Buchl said that with six employees, organic cleaning supplies around three to four households a day. Depending on availability, they sometimes process more.

The company also runs Cleaning 4 Kids, a nonprofit association that offers free biological cleaning to families with children who are receiving chemotherapy or have an illness that requires a sterile environment.

The crew does not use chemicals. Instead, high-temperature vapors, dry steam and essential oil products are used to kill bacteria such as mold and mildew without chemicals being harmful to health.

"One of the big inquiries we have right now is about people who are moving out and want a thorough cleaning," he said. "We try everything to make everything as crown-free as possible."

Jorge Lee, owner of Marin House Cleaning in Sausalito, said customers have canceled cleaning since the outbreak of the corona virus. The team of seven usually cleans seven houses a day, but that has decreased, he said.

"It's difficult," he said, noticing that some people seemed careful to invite others into their homes. "Everyone is hiding, getting food and supplies, and they don't want to leave the house."

Lee said the company uses homemade vinegar-based cleaning solutions that do not help disinfect.

"We told our customers that we would take chlorine and that we could disinfect it," he said. "I think we're seeing more and more customers want us to use their disinfectant products, so they're confident."

Lee said his company had also received high-quality cleaning requests that would be included in the regular service.

MaidPro works in Mill Valley with 12 employees who do dozens of house cleanings daily, Terheyden said. The company uses exclusive cleaning solutions without bleach or ammonia.

Since the outbreak, the company has under bit.ly/38UF70w an internal published online training video to the public professional cleaning tips tell .

"As a rule of thumb, the surface of most products needs to be wet for about 10 minutes before cleaning to really disinfect something," Terheyden said.

To prevent the spread of germs in general, "washing your hands is the best thing you can do," he said.

"We are a security industry at the forefront," said Terheyden. "I think this extra attention will give some people some rest."

The Marin County Department of Health recommends that the community clean and disinfect occupied areas, wash their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and otherwise use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Soap and water are provided.
