With all of the problems in the supply chain, taking care of many of the things we have, including the equipment, can be more important than ever.

The microwave is a staple food for many families.

"We use it all day, every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner," said Caroline Schofield.

He does all of this work and is abused a lot.

In order for them to last as long as possible, microwaves need a little love.

Consumer Reports says the average unit should last about 10 years.

To ensure that your microwave has a long service life, clean the interior regularly, because dirt residues are not only coarse, but can also absorb energy and, when the microwave is switched on, cause hot spots that can damage the interior. So clean up spills as soon as they occur.

Above the door, which tends to close, is simple but really important technology inside.

"There are switches in the door that turn off the oven when it is opened. There are also latch components that need to stay aligned, so don't close the door, "said Tanya Christian of Consumer Reports.

Never let your microwave run empty. Microwaves vibrate molecules in food and generate heat so that the device can overheat without anything.

Certain items can catch fire or create sparks and should never be used in your microwave, including brown paper bags, metal pots or coffee mugs, removing containers with metal handles, zip ties, or anything covered with aluminum foil.

If you see sparks or arcs in your microwave, turn it off immediately.

"Line width microwaves are not easy to replace, so take special care. Use the exhaust fan while cooking to prevent moisture from building up on the microwave's electronics, "said Christian.

If you have children who use the microwave make sure they understand the difference between setting the minutes and the hours. One simple mistake can fry your microwave.

Finally, clean the exhaust air filter by immersing it in hot water and a grease-dissolving cleaning agent. Read your manual before putting it in the dishwasher.
