Doing tough cleaning jobs for too long can result in a high bill.
Harvey Water Softeners said it could cost up to £ 180 a year to build scale because it shortens the life of equipment.
To keep costs down, I asked Harvey's Toby Jones for advice.
AVOID FANTASY PRODUCTS: Start with a regular store-bought limescale cleaner . Toby says, "They're inexpensive, but read the label correctly to make sure it's right for the affected area."
My advice: the Oust Universal Descaler is only £ 1.40 from Asda and does a great job.
KITCHEN CABINET RAID: Toby says, "One of the most effective ways to remove limescale is to use natural elements like vinegar or lemon juice, which break down limescale easily. All you have to do is soak the affected area for at least an hour. That little bit is really important. After that, the lime should be gone. ""
My advice: get a refillable Wilko spray for just £ 1 and spray the affected areas with your vinegar or lemon solution.
ASK THE WINE KEEPER: "White wine works wonders on limestone. Naturally removes limescale by breaking down calcium carbonate so it is easy to clean.
"The only difficult part here is cleaning the vertical glass. This makes it difficult to soak the affected area. However, this can be fixed. Just apply a little more wine and repeat the process several times until the stains are gone. ""
My advice: use a squeegee to clean the residue and get a high gloss. Ikea has them for 75 pence.
ON THE MAIN PROBLEM: "The best way to prevent limescale build-up is to avoid the hard water that is present, which causes limescale," says Toby.
"Installing a non-electric water softener is a simple solution and takes longer than any manual cleaning method."
My advice: Harvey will also let you try or rent a water softener to see if it works for you.
