The best time to aerate cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass, which make up most of the lawns in the Chicago area, is in the spring and fall, when the grasses are actively growing. Weather conditions vary from year to year, but April or May and September or October are usually good months to plan ventilation. I prefer the spring-loaded window for core ventilation. For heavily used lawns, it can be beneficial to aerate twice a year.
