TIMMINS - It's one of the busiest times of the year for shop owner Sylvie Levesque in Timmins for cleaning.
With the city's popular spring cleaning program canceled for the second time due to COVID-19, it is particularly important to follow the traditions of spring cleaning.
"Your house could get very dirty from bringing germs and viruses everywhere during the day," Levesque said. "There's a lot of rubbish in town too, so it's not just about cleaning the house, it's outside cleaning the yard, collecting rubbish. Keep our city nice and clean. And be proud of them.
The city encourages people to dump their rubbish at the Deloro landfill. Tip fees do not apply towards the end of May. Details can be found here .
However, the city's executive director, Dave Landers, said the city could not justify continuing its popular cleanup program due to the risk of a pandemic and an order to stay home.
"A lot of people go door to door and yard to yard sorting other cleaning waste, which drives much more traffic in and around neighborhoods," Landers said. "This year we certainly cannot encourage people to tour the church this way."
It is difficult to use subcontractors
Additionally, he said figuring out how to deploy contractors was difficult while following COVID-19 regulations in a timely manner to run the program.
While residents are doing their personal spring cleaning, Landers advises people to sort their waste by material so the process goes smoothly.
And Levesque noted that thorough cleaning of your home is a must, but it can be a bit intimidating. So he suggested a few areas that need cleaning to get started.
"There's a really big one under the furniture, the vents," Levesque said, cleaning all the handles and doorknobs in the house.
Pandemic or not, he said keeping your home plumbing year round is important, but spring is a good time to get used to it.
"You feel good when you have a clean home, stay healthy, keep germs out and have a nice home," said Levesque.
