Do you want to help the planet? Events offer the opportunity to give something back for Earth Day

It's a way to thank the earth and an opportunity to give back.

Several Earth Day cleanups are taking place in Southern California. Whether you want to join a volunteer group or do a solo cleanup, there are several ways you can go to help.

While Earth Day is technically Thursday, April 22nd, there will be events this weekend and next. And the virtual options run throughout the month and can be run at your own pace.

An additional benefit? The weather couldn't be better this weekend. Temperatures hit the upper 70s and possibly even the 80s along the coast.

Here are a few ways to participate:

Save Our Beach: The Seal Beach-based nonprofit will be performing two cleanups on Saturday April 17th in honor of Earth Day.

Volunteers can meet on 1st Street near the San Gabriel River on the Long Beach border, and Seal Beach Pier on Ocean and Main Streets.

Registration is required and gardening gloves are provided. Masks are mandatory at the registration desk. Free parking is also available and reusable bags are also distributed. Disinfected collectors are also provided.

Half of the proceeds will be donated to Coastkeeper until April 23rd.

Fill your bag with junk you've collected from everywhere and head back to a pub for a raffle of paddle boards, skateboards, and more.

People are encouraged to attend one of your organized beach cleanings or to pick up trash and debris from sidewalks, sewers, storm sewers, or waterways in your area to help stop pollution in your area.

The beach cleaning takes place on April 24th from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.:

  • In South Bay on the north side of Manhattan Beach Pier on Marine Street
  • On Redondo Beach near Ruby Street
  • At Doheny State Beach, Dana Point, San Juan Creek, near Lifeguard 2.

Aquarium of the Pacific: The Aquarium of the Pacific is hosting a virtual festival to celebrate Earth Day number 21 annually.

"Everyone can help protect this oceanic planet on which we all depend and on which we are at home. We hope people learn simple things they can do every day to celebrate Earth Day, "said Emily Yam, Senior Director of Education at Aquarium of the Pacific.

The aquarium will meet the animals, greet them and give them daily advice on how to protect the environment. A virtual event will take place on April 24th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information on planning, check out the social channels or the Aquarium of the Pacific website.

Starting with Earth Day, the aquarium is encouraging the public to participate in an ongoing clean-up initiative as part of its new community science program called TRASH.

Citizen scientists can also help by joining your local sea turtle monitoring project to help this endangered green sea turtle population.
