At least five workers died Saturday after inhaling toxic gases while cleaning an underground tank at a pharmaceutical facility in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district, a fire officer said. The incident took place at a wastewater treatment plant at a pharmaceutical plant in the village of Khatraj in Gandhinagar's Kalol.

"With the facility closed today, management has decided to clean the tank that holds the facility's liquid waste before sending it off for treatment. Although there is hardly any liquid residue in the tank, the workers were not aware of the presence of gas inside, "said Mod.

One of the workers passed out in the tank, whereupon four others stepped in one after the other to rescue him and eventually died from the toxic gases, he said.

The factory owners did not provide workers with safety equipment or masks, the official said.

"One by one, the five workers entered and passed out after inhaling the toxic gas normally found in tanks of sewage. When the Gandhinagar firefighters found out about the incident, they rushed to the scene and removed the men who were already dead, "added Mod.

The deceased are identified as Vinay, Shahi, Devendra Kumar, Ashish Kumar and Ranjan Kumar, all between 30 and 35 years old, he said.
