Believe it or not, spring is here. And it's also time to officially make our homes dirt-free. We get it: seasonal spring cleaning can be a daunting task. And as rewarding as it is to see our living spaces shine, getting started is a real hassle. Fortunately, as always, we have a solution.
We thought it was time to seek expert advice. Lo and behold, Melissa Maker gives us some pro tips. Yes, Melissa Maker from Clean My Space . Yes, the one who helped us keep our home free of dust and clutter with her blog posts, YouTube videos and books. Yes, the same one who is now a Clorox brand ambassador .
So we turned to the mastermind of this cleaning and organizing pro to sharpen our skills and motivate us to get started. And of course to set the mood, because all major cleaning projects start with a good mood. Anyway, this is what he shared with us...
#1 Don't confuse spring cleaning with daily cleaning
"I do everything together when my spring cleaning starts!" If you caught yourself saying that, you, like us, are guilty of what Maker says is an absolute no-no. Bringing everything together in a project makes the process overwhelming. Washing dishes, laundry and other daily/weekly chores and disinfecting hard surfaces should not be on your spring cleaning checklist. Melissa suggests that when planning spring cleaning, we focus on less common tasks, like dusting baseboards or picture frames.
"Spring cleaning is more about taking care of your surfaces, fixtures and appliances, like an annual oil change for your home," says Melissa.
#2 Don't underestimate the power of a checklist
There are several reasons why a checklist is a crucial starting point. It serves as a reminder of things that need to be done and helps prioritize and eliminate tasks that don't fit our bill. Melissa encourages us to download a checklist (something roughly in line with our goals) and then customize it. An online checklist often reminds us of tasks that we may have forgotten. Take, for example, checking your washing machine for mold or removing dirt that has built up in your oven (two important tasks on the list).
And while homework doesn't require you to have a tedious checklist or track your homework online, some clean-up is a must. Maintaining household appliances (not just washing machines and ovens, but everything else) seems to be high on Melissa's list. That is, of course, if you are not a tenant.
#3 Get your PTTs right
Are you wondering what PTT is? We also. PTT refers to the products, tools and techniques you need for your cleaning. And for Makers (and even us) Clorox is the obvious choice . Not only do you have bleaching and non-bleaching alternatives, but the latest innovation kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Impressive, right?
Clorox disinfectant wipes , Clorox disinfectant mist and Clorox disinfectant wipes are part of your regular cleaning kit. In fact, the wipes are structured to catch four times more dirt and hair than Clorox disinfecting wipes. "My cat, like many other cats, throws up sometimes, and there's some confidence in using something like these cleaning cloths and not having to think twice about living on the floor," says Melissa.
And disinfectant mist is incredibly versatile. Can be used on countertops, doorknobs, bathroom exterior walls and oven doors. Just spray and go. In addition, it acts as a deodorant thanks to its delicious aroma of lemongrass and tangerine.
BONUS TIP: Don't overdo it!
This is the advice that matters most, at least to us. Melissa reminds us that cleaning is taking care of your home. However, this should not be done at the expense of self-care. "Cleaning is about taking care of your home, but there's also self-care, and if spending a lot of time cleaning doesn't make you happy, then you shouldn't. It shouldn't feel like a chore, just sticking to the requirements," says the cleaning guru. Hmmm, that's advice now, we'll live forever.
Well there you have it folks, the four tips to get into cleaning mode and improve your cleaning process. Happy spring and happy cleaning!
