La Niña's cruel owner has ensured that much of Queensland and New South Wales is inundated with water during the summer and autumn, and the wet weather is expected to continue into the winter, according to the BOM.
The relentless humidity has meant that even people in homes and businesses that weren't devastated by the floods now face serious mold and mildew problems.
For those who are not used to dealing with creeping mushrooms, getting rid of them proves difficult. Advice on best practices is circulating on social media.
Lisa Bentley of Lisa's Eco Cleaning on Brisbane's Westside has been collecting tips on the best mold removal for 17 years. Through extensive research and experimentation, he found the effective formula.
How to remove mold from walls and other hard surfaces
Mrs. Bentley says clove oil is essential for killing mold spores.
Although some cleaners use bleach, the mold will simply turn white for a while so that it's no longer visible, but it's likely to come back.
She says this technique works on most surfaces except limestone or marble:
- Add 1/4 teaspoon of clove oil to a quart of water; Clove oil is no longer needed as it can stain surfaces.
- Use a spray bottle to spray it lightly on the mold and then leave it on for 24 hours.
- After a day, clean the surface with a mixture of white vinegar and water (three parts vinegar, two parts water).
- A 1 liter bottle of formula should last around a year around the house.
Mold treatment on leather or wood:
- Mix 1/4 teaspoon of clove oil in 250 milliliters of baby oil and shake.
- Apply very lightly to leather and wood surfaces to remove mildew.
- Don't abuse! — this little bottle should also last about a year.
Mold removal from soft surfaces and fabrics:
- Put 1 kg of non-iodised table salt in a 9 liter bucket of water
- Stir with hands until dissolved
- Place the moldy garment in the solution and let it soak overnight.
- Take the soaked item and hang it on the clothesline to dry slowly.
- The slower it dries, the better: as the salt crystals reform, they expand in the fibers and pull out mold.
- After drying, brush out the shape.
Tarpaulins/parasols etc. :
- Dip a broom in the above salt solution and brush the surface.
- Wait for it to dry and then brush it off.
prevent mold
Prevention is better than cure, of course, but sometimes that's easier said than done.
Removing moisture and moisture is key to stopping mold because it needs moisture and nutrients to grow.

safety instructions
The Queensland Health website recommends taking precautions when removing mold because it can be dangerous to breathe.
He suggests you get "personal protective equipment, including disposable half-masks with P1 or P2 filters, to avoid inhaling mold spores while cleaning.
"You can find them in hardware stores."
It also means putting rags on the floor and making sure no one else is around while you're cleaning when they don't need you.
They say you don't put dirty clothes back in your cleaning solution and "always use a different cloth for each operation and then throw it away or the mold spores will spread and the mold will come back."
Other mold elimination formulas
Queensland Health has a few different suggestions:
- A solution of 3 parts vinegar and 2 parts water.
- A solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water
- A solution of tea tree oil and water.
- Commercially available products from the supermarket, but be sure to follow the safety instructions to protect your eyes and skin.
Where can I find clove oil?
Products like clove oil and white vinegar can be hard to find these days with so many people struggling with mold issues.
Clove oil, described by one retailer as "like liquid gold right now," is available when available at some pharmacies, health food and health food stores, or through online retailers.
