How to prepare for your move off campus | Department of Academic Affairs | University of Colorado Boulder

If you live off campus and are moving to a new location, it's good to be prepared. Here are some tips to help make your move a success.

Know where your waste goes

Moving can lead to a lot of waste. You could be fined up to $2,650 for violating Boulder's garbage ordinance . This includes improperly disposing of your rubbish or personal items such as sofas and other large furniture. And if you live in the neighborhoods west of Broadway, be sure to use bear-resistant trash cans.

Looking for more tips to get rid of your waste?

  • It is illegal to dispose of electronic equipment in the Colorado landfill. Garbage trucks can't pick up your garbage cans if they see electronic devices in them. Computers and other electronic equipment can be recycled at select recycling centers including ChaRm .

  • Mattresses can be recycled! Visit Spring Back Colorado for more information on disposing of your mattress.

  • Bulky goods can be picked up at your home. See EcoCycle resources for more information.

Instead of buying new furniture, you can save money and help the environment by storing your furniture. Summer storage is available at the UPS store on campus or check out the cheap self-storage units in the Boulder area . You can also donate items in Boulder instead of throwing them away.

Check the moving process

Make sure you know your moving process or check with your landlord what will be required of you. Check your lease for specific requirements you need to meet before moving in, such as: B. Repairing holes in walls, repairing minor damage, replacing air filters and other maintenance-related tasks. Many leases have penalties that can be levied for an improper move. Please refer to your original move-in checklist to see if there was any prior damage for which you are not responsible.

Schedule a free legal meeting with Attorney Bruce Sarbaugh of Off Campus and Neighborhood Relations (OCHNR) to see what you can do to get your deposit back and have a positive relocation experience. It can be worth investing in a cleaning service to give your home a deep clean and ensure you get your money back. Some homeowners may want a deep clean before moving in, others may just ask that you sweep the floors. Take a look at our suggested move-in procedures and fill out your move-out form .
